This unit covers Proper 6 through Proper 9 in Lectionary Year C. It is designed to help students understand 1) the cross shaped life of the Christian; 2) the social status in the new creation; 3) the dual nature of Christian freedom; and 4) doing life together in the Church.
Lesson 1: The Crucified Life—Because the life, death, and resurrection of Christ have defined the way people should live for God, Christians are to imitate Christ's self-sacrificial obedience and faithfulness in their daily lives. (2 Samuel 11:26-12:10, 13-15; Psalm 32; Galatians 2:15-21; Luke 7:36-8:3)
Lesson 2: We are Family—Through faith in Christ, anyone can become one of God's chosen people, of equal value, regardless of their gender, race, social status, or ethnic background. (Isaiah 65:1-9; Psalm 22:19-28; Galatians 3:23-29; Luke 8:26-39)
Lesson 3: A Free Life—Christ frees us from oppressive religious rules and regulations; not so we can do whatever we want, but so we can serve others from the personal qualities the Holy Spirit develops within us.
