Lectionary Year C, Unit 07: Easter 7--Proper 5
This unit covers the Seventh Sunday of Easter through the Proper 5 in Lectionary Year C. It is designed to help students understand 1) the Ascension is a necessary part of the Christian story, giving closure to Jesus' earthly ministry and beginning the ministry of the Church until Christ comes again; 2) the Holy Spirit's role in making the gospel accessible to all people, regardless of culture, ethnic group, language, race, or class; 3) the Holy Spirit as one person of the Trinity, conveying divine truth to humans; and 4) God's mercy to all people, regardless of their previous relationship to Him.
Lesson 1: While We WaitJesus' earthly life ended when He ascended to heaven, but He passed on to His followers the authority and power to continue the mission He began. (Acts 1:1-11; Psalm 97; Rev. 22:12-14, 16-17, 20-21; John 17:20-26)
Lesson 2: In Their Own LanguageThe Holy Spirit will help us overcome the barriers we encounter in witnessing about the great things God has done in Christ. (Genesis 11:1-9; Psalm 104:24-34, 35b; Acts 2:1-21; John 14:8-17, 25-27)
Lesson 3: A Holy PresenceAs the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit reminds us of, and explains, what Jesus the Son has already revealed about God the Father. (Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31; Psalm 8; Romans 5:1-5; John 16:12-15)
Lesson 4: Healing From the HeartThe life-giving power of God is available to all people, even those who may seem to be furthest away from God. (1 Kings 17:17-24; Psalm 30; Galatians 1:11-24; Luke 7:11-17)
