Product Summary

This unit takes young adults through a study of emotions, which are an essential part of being human. It specifically focuses on four areas with which young adults commonly struggle: fear, stress, anger, and suffering. This lesson looks at the Gospels and the epistles for insight into dealing with emotions in ways that are pleasing to God.

Lesson 1: Dealing with Fear--Examines the apparently contradictory biblical commands to both fear and fear not. It grapples with the question, Can fear be good, or is fear, by its very nature, sinful? It ultimately looks at biblical examples of fear to show young adults how to handle this emotion that God has created us to feel. (Matthew 14:22-31; 2 Timothy 1:7, Hebrews 13:5-6; 1 John 4:18)

Lesson 2: Dealing with Stress--Teaches young adults that the heart of handling stress lies in a firm awareness and a proper understanding of God and God's kingdom. It includes scriptural responses to different types of stress, and it also provides concrete suggestions for reducing stress. (Matthew 6:32-34; 10:30-31; 28:16-20; 1 Corinthians 15:54-58; 2 Corinthians 5:1; 9:6-15; 12:7-10; 1 Peter 5:6-7)

Lesson 3: Dealing with Anger--Attempts to get a grip on what anger is, what causes it, how it influences us, and how to control it. It focuses on a few key biblical passages concerning anger and how to deal with it, including how Jesus dealt with anger. This study aims to lead young adults toward a healthy understanding of this complex emotion. (Matthew 21:12-13; Mark 3:1-5; Romans 12:14-19; Ephesians 4:26-27; James 1:19-20)

Lesson 4: Dealing with Suffering--Tries to correct three crippling myths about suffering: the myth of happiness as life's goal, the myth of Christians' immunity from suffering, and the myth of suffering as a sign of rejection. It also provides six specific suggestions of healthy ways that young adults can respond to suffering. (Job; Psalms 23; 44; Matthew 25:31-46; Romans 5:1-11; 8)
