Rev. Sydney Martin, prior to his retirement in 1975, was for 25 years pastor of the Sharpe Memorial Church in Parkhead, Glasgow, Scotland, the mother Church of the Nazarene in the British Isles. He had served a prior pastorate from 1944 to 1950 in Twechar, Scotland. While serving these churches, he was also a visiting lecturer at Hurlet Nazarene College (now Nazarene Theological College in Manchester, England) and at Faith Mission Bible College in Glasgow. He presented the Wiley Lectures at Pasadena College in 1968, and the Collins Lectures at Canadian Nazarene College in 1972, the essence of these being published in the book The Gospel of Power. He was also Preacher of the Year at Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1972, and was a contributor to the symposium Proclaiming the Spirit. In 1974 he delivered the Strickland Lectures at the South Africa Nazarene Bible College, and returned there in 1977 as visiting lecturer in Christian theology, homiletics, and the Pauline epistles.
